Over 120 elementary schools are in need of playgrounds or significant playground repair. Out2Play estimates that approximately 100,000 children do not currently have access to playground space. Approximately 50% of New York City elementary schools do not have playground access. The need for play space is even more paramount given the prevalence of obesity and its related health problems among today’s youth: 43% of New York City schoolchildren are overweight. New York City school children are twice as likely to be hospitalized for asthma. Increasing incidence of childhood diabetes in low-income neighborhoods.
